As we begin to become more and more aware of what we put into our bodies and how we move our bodies to create optimal health, we should also start to look at our beauty products and the ingredients that we put on our skin every day. Every beauty product we put on each day, from our deodorant to our facial lotion stinks into our skin, which is our largest pore and affects our general health just as much as the food you put into our body.
However, natural ingredients and products can also be really expensive and when you’re already investing in your health in other realms such as organic food and yoga classes, you might not have the budget to also invest in beauty products. Luckily there are so many do it yourself recipes and ideas floating around and it’s becoming easier to create your own natural and good for you products that you can feel safe and confident putting on your body every day.
Deodorant is often a beauty product that we forget about, using it as part of a habit, rather than a conscious decision each day. Most deodorant on the market is full of harmful ingredients, but it is easy and cheap to create your own deodorant paste that will keep you smelling good and safe from harmful chemicals. This recipe uses ingredients you have laying around and once you make the paste you can put into a container or an old deodorant tube.
Mix everything together, potentially playing with the amount of arrowroot powder or coconut oil depending on the consistency of the mixture. Make sure you choose an essential oil that is safe to use on your skin.
My favorite natural perfume is a mix of essential oils and a small amount of coconut oil. Grapefruit makes a good base for a fruity, energizing perfume and you can add layers onto it, depending on your mood or the time of day. Play around with different blends and make something that is as unique as you are!
Natural body scrubs can be created from a base of either sugar or salt, but I prefer to use a mix of brown and white sugar for different textures and to exfoliate the skin more deeply. Just mix equal parts of sugar and pure coconut oil until you find a consistency that is just right to get the level of skin exfoliation that you desire. Then you can essential oils to this mix depending on your preferred scents. I love to make peppermint and lemon body scrubs that are the perfect blend to wake you up in the morning and get you going.
100% Shea Butter makes the one ingredient natural body and face moisturizer. You can eliminate all other lotion products in your cabinet and instead invest in one good product, and the best thing about shea butter is that you only need a very small amount to use on your entire body.
